7 Things an Orthodontist Wants You to Know
Orthodontists are among the most trusted medical professionals in the United States, with 80% of Americans reporting that they’d be more likely to go to an orthodontist than a general dentist. If you’re looking into orthodontic treatment, read on to discover the top seven things an orthodontist wants you to know about your options and treatment plan.
1) Are they communicative?
Ask your friends and co-workers if they know a good orthodontist. If you don’t know anyone who has had orthodontic work done, ask for recommendations at your local gym or from your dentist. Look for someone who takes time to explain what he or she is doing during each step of treatment and listens carefully as you describe any concerns. With a specialized field like dentistry, it’s important that your orthodontist be good communicator. Good communication not only ensures you get what you want out of treatment, but also helps prevent future problems caused by improper dental care throughout your life. Most patients are able to choose their own orthodontists, so take advantage of that freedom when looking for one.
2) Do they recommend braces colors?
Dentists recommend white brackets. The reasoning for that is that by keeping your braces colors neutral, it allows you to use many of them at a time, or interchange colors whenever you want. They’re not expensive and a fun way to express yourself if you’re feeling creative! If your first set isn’t exactly perfect and look like something an orthodontist designed (meaning they don’t match perfectly), don’t worry! Many sets of braces come with extra wires so you can adjust them as needed. They do need cleaned every once in a while, however! So be sure to bring toothpaste with fluoride when you visit your orthodontist. Fluoride helps kill bacteria and keeps your teeth healthy while they straighten out.
3) How long have they been practicing?
Your orthodontist is a professional and has many years of experience in treating patients and creating beautiful smiles. Ask them how long they’ve been practicing; usually you’ll want to go with someone who has at least 10 years of experience. You can also ask them about their certifications or if they are a member of any organizations like AAO (American Association of Orthodontists). If your doctor doesn’t have much experience or is not up-to-date on current procedures, you may want to think twice before getting treatment from them.
4) Am I a good candidate?
The most important thing you can do is meet with a qualified orthodontist, who will assess your mouth and give you advice on how braces might fit into your treatment plan. Most orthodontists recommend that patients wait until their permanent teeth come in—usually around age 12 or 13—before getting braces. Before that time, it’s difficult for them to determine whether braces are appropriate; there could be enough space in your child’s mouth now, but he or she may have less space later. And, if nothing else, it’s hard to get used to wearing something uncomfortable like wires between your teeth when you’re young!
5) Do they use traditional braces or clear aligners?
Most orthodontists will use both traditional braces and clear aligners. If a patient is only looking for their teeth to be straightened, traditional braces are usually better, as they can correct misalignment in some cases that clear aligners can’t handle. However, if a patient wants their teeth straighter, but also wants them more cosmetically appealing in less time than it would take with traditional braces (which sometimes takes years), then clear aligners may be a better option. Some patients even use a combination of both treatments, where they start with clear aligners and finish with traditional braces. Whatever treatment you choose is up to you, your orthodontist will help you figure out what’s best for your case based on your goals and needs.
6) How many years should I expect treatment to take?
Each case is different, but in general, you can expect that treatment will last anywhere from one to two years. We understand that’s a long time and we want you to know that while things may take a while now, they will be worth it in the end! It’s our job as orthodontists to get your teeth straightened as quickly and efficiently as possible, so there’s no reason for you not to have a clear smile by your next birthday. Be sure to ask about our accelerated orthodontic treatment options when you visit us for your initial consultation!
7) Is there anything else I should know?
By now, you’ve probably heard enough about all of the various options for teeth straightening and braces color options. But what about alternatives? An orthodontist will tell you that their treatment is hands down superior to any other option because there simply isn’t another way to get a better result. While that may be true, remember that a good orthodontist won’t try to force you into anything. There are other ways to straighten your teeth if Invisalign or braces aren’t right for you. These alternative methods aren’t as reliable, but they can still give you a great smile!
