You may be wondering how long it takes to get overbite braces or how long it takes to get underbite braces, and that’s understandable! However, it’s important to know that there are many variables involved in this process that make the timeline quite unpredictable; the severity of your case, your dentist’s schedule, and the seasonal business trends can all play into how quickly you can get your bite corrected.

What is an Overbite

An overbite occurs when teeth on both your top and bottom jaw protrude out of your mouth. In other words, they extend past your bottom lip, resulting in a crooked smile. If you have an overbite, you’re probably worried about your appearance when you smile. Underbites are similar; however, instead of having excessive teeth coming out from above your lips, it’s actually those below that appear prominent.

Getting braces for your overbite

First, if you have an overbite before and after, you’ll need to wear a bite block for about 1-2 months. This prevents your tongue from interfering with treatment and allows us to pinpoint exactly where we need to place your retainer. Once your bite is stabilized, orthodontic treatment can begin.

Most overbite braces are worn 22 hours per day and take between 18-24 months. The first step is making impressions of your teeth and having them sent off for fabrication, which takes roughly 2 weeks. After that, there’s a small adjustment period while you get used to wearing them full time; typically less than 1 week. Fixing an overbite can be challenging but it’s worth it!

What Are Bite Blocks

Braces can take anywhere from two months to over a year depending on how severe your condition is and what kind of treatment you receive. There are three main kinds of braces: clear, metal and ceramic. The process for each is different, but they all require ongoing adjustments that begin immediately after you get them. Bite blocks, which are removable plastic pieces that mold over your teeth and prevent food from getting caught in between, are often used in addition to braces for up to six months during treatment. If you’re considering overbite braces or underbite braces it’s worth knowing how long each type takes before making a decision.

The Cost of Bite Block Braces

There’s no getting around it—underbite braces are expensive. Bite blocks braces can cost as much as $2,000 out of pocket. And that’s not all: you’ll need to commit four months or more of your life (and checkbook) to get overbite braces. But what if you could get them for free? Or almost free? What if we told you there was a way to pay only $250 instead of thousands... and still fix your overbite?

Tips to Choose a Good Orthodontist

Choosing an orthodontist for your child isn’t something that you want to take lightly. As with any dentist, it is important that your child feels comfortable and safe in their new orthodontist’s office. Their teeth should come first in every appointment! Choosing a good orthodontist is just as important as choosing a dentist for your family. Here are some tips to help you find a great orthodontist:

This list gives you five things to look for when choosing an Ortho Specialist for braces. If there is one rule of thumb I would give about picking out someone who specializes in correcting bite issues is make sure they have worked on teens before! Working on younger people will help them relate better and make sure they are not overly pushy on having braces put on your teen. When picking out an Ortho Specialist also keep in mind how much experience they have had working on teens; Ortho specialists can range from general practice dentists all the way up to specialists who exclusively do Invisalign or braces which requires significantly more time under supervision by another specialist anyway!
